WHY WORK RELATIONSHIPS CAN DESTROY HOME RELATIONSHIPS AND STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME
Posted by Dr. Kelly R. Rasmussen
How is it that we allow our work relationships to weave into our home life (and vice versa) and wreak havoc on our lives?
This inability to maintain balance and good communication goes way beyond the cliche of "leave work at work and home at home."
Today we are more connected than ever and relate to one another even more in sound bytes and bits of information which we think are important to share. Our ability to empathize (which takes time, understanding and commitment) is sometimes lost in translation.
If you or someone you know is struggling with the steps necessary to rebuild a relationship at work or at home, there is help!!! And it is more than trying to manage your life at the polar opposite sides of your brain!
START HERE:
1. Increase intimacy - not always easy, and not all about sex. This means connecting (truly) with another about things that are important to them.
2. Increase closeness - this means going out of your way to put that phone down (or whatever distraction) and listen, ask questions, and look another in the eye.
3. Increase good Communications - for example - replace "I don't care" with "you choose" or "I would like either." Another example, replace "You're killin' me" with something that does not tell your brain that you are being killed. (Heads up - it doesn't understand that there is a difference).
Lastly - Consult with someone who has excelled in relationship building! That's where you can cut out bad steps, and begin new habits for good steps! The benefits are quicker and your relationship begins to grow in a good way, much faster!
