WHAT DO THEY WANT ANYHOW??? Shouldn't they just be happy to have a job?

Well, NO, actually.

Those who sit the chair (sometimes it feels like the electric chair), know all too well that some shifts feel like they will never rise from that console again. Due to the weight they carry from callers who at times are inept, misinformed, abusive, and even threatening to the one who answers "9-1-1".

How can you protect these unsung heroes whose backs are against the wall most of the time scrapping for every benefit they get? How do you keep the peace when they've become more negative than some of the arch villains that screenplay writers could ever dream up.

Go figure - because they are drained of their energy, their protective factors, and their only coping mechanisms that they brought with them to this job from the beginning?

1: Give them a REAL BREAK ROOM - and then - REAL BREAKS!!!!!! And let them invite their family or friends to eat with them and talk about REAL LIFE so they can escape some of the consuming negativity in that room.

2: Encourage, insist, do raffles, auction stuff off, have a bake sale, or whatever you can do to send them to their Trade Conferences like APCO and NENA. Let them see what the future holds for them so they can plan! Then need to be informed and able to make decisions based on that information (like things such as how will we deal with video to 911).

3: REWARDS! Whether they act like they like it or not! And they do not have to be big ones! Little notes, thank you cards, a free coffee at their favorite coffee stop or send a pizza to them on their day off so they can enjoy real family time with family!

And Finally - Fill them up with REAL MOTIVATION from those who know the chair! Secure their registration for the only conference where dispatchers tell their stories of survival and motivation - www.9114911.com

Celebrate these amazing heroes who hold our world together!
